Im Ausdauertest des auf Laptoptests spezialisierte Magazins LaptopMag geht dem Surface Laptop nach 9:02 Stunden die Energie aus. Dieser gemessene Wert deckt sich mit meiner Alltagserfahrung, wenn man pausenlos mit dem Laptop arbeitet.

Microsoft verspricht gar bis zu 14,5 Stunden Akkulaufzeit. Das ist zwar korrekt, allerdings wird dieser Wert nur erreicht, wenn man Netflix oder YouTube über Microsofts stromsparenden Edge-Browser streamt. Für ein relativ dünnes und leichtes Notebook wie den Surface Laptop sind aber auch 9 Stunden sehr beachtlich.

Was taugen Tastatur und Touchpad? Ein Laptop kann technisch noch so brillant sein, wenn Tastatur und Touchpad nicht vollends überzeugen, ist es kein guter Laptop. Glücklicherweise müssen sich Käufer eines Surface Laptops diesbezüglich keine Sorgen machen. Im Gegenteil: Die Tastatur ist erstklassig, sehr ähnlich der Surface-Book-Tastatur, aber noch eine Spur leiser. Der Tastenanschlag ist ein Tick weicher als bei der Cover-Tastatur des Surface Pro.

Auch das grosse Touchpad reagiert schnell und präzise. Scrollen mit zwei Fingern und andere Wischgesten mit mehreren Fingern funktionieren genau so geschmeidig wie auf einem Surface Book. Das Touchpad ist übrigens deutlich grösser als beim Surface Pro.

Die Tastatur ist mit Alcantara (Kunstleder) überzogen. Das Material gilt als pflegeleicht und ist wasserresistent. Schmutz kann man also wie auf einer Aluminium- oder Plastik-Tastatur mit warmen Wasser abwischen. Wikipedia sagt hierzu: «Das Textil fühlt sich sehr weich an, ist antistatisch, strapazierfähig, reinigungsfreundlich, atmungsaktiv, elastisch, allergieneutral und lässt sich leicht und faltenfrei aufspannen.» Klingt gut.

Ob das Kunstleder in zwei Jahren noch wie neu aussehen wird, kann ich natürlich nicht sagen. Aber immerhin gibt es Erfahrungswerte, da Microsoft schon seit über einem Jahr eine Cover-Tastatur für das Surface Pro mit Alcantara verkauft. Der Kollege beim «Tages-Anzeiger» schreibt hierzu: «Fest steht, dass die Alcantara-Tastatur des Surface-Tablets auch nach über einem Jahr, ohne sie je geputzt zu haben, noch wie neu aussieht.» Dies scheint mir plausibel, zumal Alcantara eigentlich nichts anders als Polyester bzw. Plastik ist und auch für Sitzbezüge in teuren Autos zum Einsatz kommt.

Windows 10 unterstützt nebst dem guten alten Passwort auch Fingerprint-Scanner und die Anmeldung per Gesichtserkennung. Mit der Kamera im Surface Laptop funktioniert dies auch mit Brille und in dunklen Räumen.

Bei den Anschlüssen sieht es eher mager aus: Microsoft hat gegenüber dem Surface Book den zweiten USB-Anschluss gestrichen und im Vergleich zum Surface Pro fehlt der MicroSD-Kartenleser. Einen USB-C-Anschluss, der schnellere Datenübertragung als USB erlauben würde, sucht man wie bei allen Surface-Geräten vergeblich.

Einerseits wäre ein USB-C-Port wünschenswert, da er Anschluss für Strom, Datenübertragung und externe Geräte in einem ist und über kurz oder lang USB 3.0 ablösen wird. Andererseits ist der Verzicht verständlich, da es noch kaum Peripheriegeräte gibt, die wirklich von USB-C profitieren und Microsoft will den Nutzern das Adapter-Chaos ersparen.

Technik-Enthusiasten werden die Nase rümpfen, alle anderen dürften mit den gebotenen Anschlüssen problemlos leben können. Zur Erinnerung: Die anvisierte Zielgruppe bei einem Laptop mit Windows 10 S sind Schulen, Studenten sowie durchschnittliche PC-Nutzer (die auch in drei Jahren noch USB-Sticks und andere ältere USB-Geräte nutzen werden) und eben nicht Profi-Fotografen, Gamer oder Programmierer.

Auf dem Surface Laptop ist Windows 10 S vorinstalliert, eine besonders sichere, aber auch eingeschränkte Windows-Version: Die Restriktionen von Windows 10 S klingen für technisch versierte Nutzer unsinnig, für viele Otto Normalverbraucher bringen sie im Alltag aber mehrere Vorteile:

Windows 10 S erlaubt nur Programme und Apps aus dem Windows Store: Böse Zungen behaupten, das S stehe für Spielverderber, weil man klassische Windows-Programme, Games und Apps nur noch aus dem Windows Store installieren kann – wie es jeder Smartphone- oder Chromebook-Nutzer seit Jahren gewohnt ist. Es ist also nicht vorgesehen, dass man potenziell unsichere Software von Webseiten herunterlädt und installiert.

Kann ich trotzdem beliebige Programme wie Chrome, Photoshop etc. installieren? Ja. Die Sicherheits-Sperre von Windows 10 S lässt sich glücklicherweise mit einem Update auf Windows 10 Pro (bis Ende 2017 gratis) umgehen. Nach dem Update, das nach knapp drei Minuten installiert ist, können wie gewohnt alle Programme und Games installiert werden.

Warum ist Windows 10 S sicherer? Windows 10 S entspricht fast eins zu eins Windows 10, allerdings hat Microsoft einige Tools für Entwickler und Administratoren deaktiviert, die potenziell für Hacker-Angriffe genutzt werden können. Mit Windows 10 S können ausschliesslich auf Schadsoftware überprüfte Apps, Programme und Games aus dem Windows Store installiert werden. Diese Software-Überprüfung entspricht den Sicherheits-Checks in den App-Stores von iOS und Android. Es ist so nicht unmöglich, aber weit unwahrscheinlicher, dass man sich Viren oder Trojaner über unsichere Webseiten oder E-Mail-Anhänge einfängt. Gerade für technisch wenig versierte Nutzer, die ihren PC möglichst gut schützen wollen, kann Windows 10 S geeignet sein.
