Stimmt es, dass ein PC mit Windows 10 S nicht langsamer wird? Auf einem neuen Laptop sind Windows 10 und Windows 10 S gleich schnell – es ist ja das gleiche Betriebssystem. Je mehr schlecht programmierte Programme auf einem Computer installiert werden, desto grösser wird das Risiko, dass sie Windows ausbremsen.

Der Nutzer hat das Gefühl, der PC werde langsamer. Der PC wird aber nie von alleine langsamer, er kann nur durch schlecht programmierte Software ausgebremst werden. Hier kommt Windows 10 S in Spiel: Microsoft verspricht, dass nur Programme und Apps in den Windows Store gelangen, die sauber programmiert sind, sprich Windows nicht ausbremsen.

Lange Rede, kurzer Sinn: Bei einem PC mit Windows 10 S ist das Risiko geringer, dass die Kiste mit der Zeit langsamer wird.

Ist mit Windows 10 S die Akkulaufzeit wirklich länger? Jein. Ein neuer Laptop läuft mit beiden Windows-10-Versionen ungefähr gleich lang. Installiert man auf einem Windows-10-Laptop veraltete, schlecht programmierte Software, kann dies die Akkulaufzeit negativ tangieren. Bei Windows 10 S können nur moderne Anwendungen aus dem Windows Store installiert werden. Bei einem PC mit Windows 10 S ist das Risiko daher geringer, dass der Akku von stromfressenden Programmen leergesaugt wird.

Es kommt darauf an, was du tun möchtest: Wer Chrome oder Firefox will, den Laptop auch zum Gamen nutzt oder im Beruf und Studium spezifische Software für Bildbearbeitung, Programmierung, Statistik etc. braucht, macht am besten gleich das Gratis-Update auf Windows 10 Pro, da es nur bis Ende 2017 kostenlos bleibt.

Das vorinstallierte Windows 10 S kann für Nutzer geeignet sein, die ihren PC möglichst gut gegen Schadsoftware schützen wollen und nur Standard-Software wie Microsoft Office, E-Mail oder Edge-Browser (ehemals Internet Explorer) benötigen.

Auch populäre Programme wie Spotify, Netflix oder VLC sind im Windows Store zu finden, iTunes folgt demnächst. Da nur überprüfte Programme und Apps aus dem Windows Store installiert werden können, verringert sich die Gefahr, dass man sich Viren oder Trojaner über unsichere Webseiten oder E-Mail-Anhänge einfängt.

Wie gut ist der Surface Laptop mit Windows 10 S im Alltag? Der Surface Laptop gehört zu den schönsten Laptops, die ich bislang in den Händen gehalten habe. Und er bestätigt die äussere Erscheinung mit solider Leistung, sehr langer Akkulaufzeit und der erstklassigen Tastatur.

Andere Laptop-Hersteller liefern sich ein Rennen um das dünnste und leichteste Notebook – oft auf Kosten der Geschwindigkeit oder Akkulaufzeit.

Tablets und Laptop-Tablet-Hybridgeräte in Ehren. Aber dieser simple Surface Laptop gefällt mir einfach besser als das fummelige Surface Pro (wer Laptops auf dem Schoss nutzt, weiss wovon ich spreche). Er ist zudem leichter, günstiger und mit dem Alcantara-Bezug irgendwie auch chicer als mein Surface Book.

Windows 10 S hat mich dazu gezwungen, mich erstmals länger mit Microsofts neuem Browser Edge zu befassen. Eigentlich nutze ich Chrome, aber Google hat seinen Browser noch nicht in den Windows Store gebracht. Edge hat mich mehr als positiv überrascht: Er ist schnell, das moderne Design gefällt und eigentlich funktioniert alles genau gleich wie bei Chrome.

Natürlich hat Edge viel weniger Erweiterungen, aber die paar wenigen, die ich tatsächlich brauche (Passwort-Manager, Werbeblocker) funktionieren tadellos. Auf einem Touchdisplay scrollt Edge viel flüssiger als Chrome und auch Wischgesten auf dem Touchpad (z.B. auf die letzte Webseite zurückgehen) werden von Edge besser unterstützt.

Eigentlich könnte ich problemlos mit Windows 10 S leben, da ich fast alles im Browser erledige – wäre da nicht ein ganz gravierender Haken: Bing! Ja, Microsoft hat tatsächlich Bing als Standard-Suchmaschine in Edge für Windows 10 S integriert – und die Google-Suche lässt sich erst nach dem Update auf Windows 10 Pro als Standard-Suche einstellen. Auf die Google-Suche will ich nicht verzichten, darum musste ich auf Windows 10 Pro upgraden, obwohl die S-Version mehrere Vorteile bieten würde (siehe Punkt 9).

Surface-Geräte sind allgemein auf der teuren Seite und da macht auch der Surface Laptop keine Ausnahme. Die offiziellen Preise auf der Microsoft-Webseite starten je nach Ausführung bei 1129 und enden bei 2449 Franken. Im Online-Handel findet man ihn rund 150 Franken günstiger. Zu teuer? Jein.

Mit dem qualitativ hochwertigen Surface Laptop kann man mindestens die nächsten vier Jahre arbeiten. Das macht pro Jahr 280 bis 612 Franken. Da sich der Laptop vorab an Studenten richtet, legt Microsoft ein Jahres-Abo für Office 365 Personal im Wert von 70 Franken drauf.

Microsofts Surface-Geräte sind allgemein ähnlich teuer wie Apple-Computer und haben die gleichen Vorteile: Gute Verarbeitungsqualität, attraktives Design, schnelle Updates und keine vorinstallierte Bloatware. Dafür zahlt man auch etwas mehr als bei der Konkurrenz.

Zum Vergleich: Das ebenfalls neue Surface Pro kostet ungefähr gleich viel wie der Surface Laptop, allerdings muss man sich die Tastatur-Schutzhülle für 140 bis 185 Franken dazu kaufen.
