alls Sie sich in der Nomenklatur von Motorola nicht so gut auskennen, ein kleiner Exkurs: Es gibt die Einstiegsgruppe, die Moto-E-Klasse, die Mittelklasse mit Motorola Moto G6, Motorola Moto G6 Plus, Moto G6 Play und die Z-Familie, Motorolas Speerspitze, die nun in der dritten Generation modular erweiterbar ist. Als jüngster Vertreter betritt das Motorola Moto Z3 Play die Redaktion. Als „Z” ein Mitglied der Elite, andererseits mit dem Zusatz „Play” markiert als das günstige Einstiegsmodell einer Truppe, die sich erst bilden muss, denn die Existenz von Moto Z3 und Moto Z3 Plus ist noch nicht bestätigt. Wir sind aber sicher: Da kommt was. Der Preis des Z3 Play lässt mit 499 Euro (UVP) einerseits Abstand zu den Premiumpreisen der Top-Smartphones, liegt aber andererseits doppelt so hoch wie beim Moto G6. Wir klären, was beim Z3 Play Premium ist und wo vielleicht mit dem Rotstift konstruiert wurde.

Das Moto Z3 Play hat aufgrund der Moto Mods, also der magnetisch montierbaren Erweiterungen für die Rückseite, erstaunlich viele Gesichter beziehungsweise Rückansichten, die den ganzen Eindruck des Smartphones ändern. Dabei muss es nicht der Monsterakku, die JBL-Box, der Alexa-Lautsprecher, der Polaroid-Sofortbildaufsatz oder der Hasselblad-Kamera-Aufsatz sein, auch die funktionslosen Mods, die eigentlich nur die Oberfläche der Rückseite wechseln, ändern den Charakter grundlegend. Wir beginnen nackt: Das Moto Z3 Play ist ein schlankes, aber ziemlich großes Handy. Die Abmessungen sind mit 156,5 Millimetern Länge und 76,5 Millimetern Breite sehr ausladend. Gerade die Breite muss man vertragen. Während ich ein Galaxy S8 mit Schutzhülle mit Daumen und Zeigefinger so umfassen kann, dass sich die Finger berühren, fehlt beim Moto Z3 Play mehr als ein Zentimeter. Das merkt man deutlich. Ein handliches Handy ist das Z3 Play jedenfalls nicht. Die Ausmaße sind abgesehen vom riesigen Bildschirm auch der Tatsache geschuldet, dass die „alten” Mods in dritter Generation kompatibel bleiben. So passt das Zubehör des Vorgängers Motorola Moto Z2 Play problemlos auf das Z3 Play.

Ohne Mod ist das Moto Z3 Play mit 6,8 Millimetern ein auffällig schlankes Handy mit einer auffällig hervorstehenden Kamera, sodass in der Testtabelle 9,2 Millimeter Bauhöhe verzeichnet werden, weil COMPUTER BILD immer an der dicksten Stelle misst. In der Hand ist das nackte Z3 Play breit, aber dünn. Und rutschig, denn die Oberfläche der Rückseite ist wie die Vorderseite aus Gorilla Glass 3. Vorn zum Rand hin abgerundet, hinten eben. Der Rahmen ist aus poliertem Aluminium. Auf der Rückseite glotzt einen die Dual-Kamera an und am unteren Rand fallen die Kontakte für die Mods ins Auge. Die dunkelblaue Rückseite des Moto Z3 Play steckt unter Gorilla Glass. Damit ist das Moto Z3 besonders schlank, aber nicht besonders griffig. Mit dem mitgelieferten Akku-Mod ist es umgekehrt.

Ich bin kein Fan von Glasrückseiten, für Leute wie mich gibt es Aufsätze aus Holz oder Leder, die für rund 20 Euro eine völlig andere Griffigkeit erzeugen. Klack und schon kommen mit der Lederrückseite Erinnerungen an die alte Haptik-Liebe Motorola Moto X auf. Oder lieber Holz oder Stoff? Ich entscheide mich für den mitgelieferten Akku, der mit der strukturierten Oberfläche bei mir offene Türen einrennt.

Motorola Moto Z3 Play © COMPUTER BILD/Michael Huch Mit dem Akku-Mod verdoppelt sich die Bauhöhe nahezu auf 12,1 Millimeter, mit der abgerundeten Rückseite liegt das Moto Z3 Play nun schwer, aber sicher und angenehm in der Hand. Die Kamera ist besser geschützt.

Das Moto Z3 Play hat ein 18:9-Display mit 6 Zoll Diagonale. Der OLED-Bildschirm ist farbstark, kontrastreich und wirkte im Test auch recht hell. Die FHD+-Auflösung mit 2160x1080 Pixeln lässt noch Luft für ein QHD-Display für ein mögliches Moto Z3 oder Z3 Plus. Ob man wirklich mehr Bildpunkte braucht, steht auf einem anderen Blatt, denn das Z3 Play bietet ein knackig scharfes Bild mit einem großen Blickwinkel. Wenn sich Sparen so äußert: gern!

Ein Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 mit acht Kernen (4x1,61 + 4x1,8 Gigahertz) und eine Adreno 509 GPU sorgen in Verbindung mit 4 Gigabyte (GB) RAM für Tempo. Im Geekbench 4 ordnet sich das Z3 Play zwischen Samsung Galaxy S6 und Galaxy S7 ein. Das ist im Alltag aber nicht so relevant. Das Z3 Play reagiert flott auf Eingaben, durch die smarten Moto-Actions kürzen Sie manchen Weg ab, etwa wenn Sie durch zweimaliges Schütteln die Taschenlampe aktivieren oder im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes im Handumdrehen die Kamera öffnen. Im Antutu bencht sich das Motorola Moto Z3 Play rund 112.000 Punkte zusammen. Die CPU-Leistung wird mit knapp 53.000 Punkten als „Besser als 93 % der Benutzer” angegeben. Der Gerätespeicher mit 32 Gigabyte (GB) oder 64 GB ist per microSD-Karte um bis zu 256 GB erweiterbar. 13 GB vom internen Speicher sind für das System reserviert. Dual-Kamera im Moto Z3 Play Auf dem Papier tritt das Moto Z3 Play wie das Moto G6 Plus mit einer Hauptkamera (f1.7) mit 12 Megapixeln und einer Assistenzlinse mit 5 Megapixeln an, die für Tiefenschärfe-Effekte im Porträt-Modus zuständig ist. Die Frontkamera (f2.0) löst mit 8 Megapixeln und einem Aufnahmewinkel von 84 Grad auf. Hier wird der Bokeh-Effekt berechnet. Aber ob mit oder ohne Dual-Kamera – so richtig exakt waren die Objektränder nicht. Die normalen Testaufnahmen bei Tageslicht überzeugten hingegen. Im HDR-Modus waren die Bilder knackig und farbintensiv, auch aus einem abgesperrten dunklen Bereich unter der Brücke holte das Z3 Play mehr raus als ein Galaxy S8. Beispielaufnahmen finden Sie unter dem Artikel verlinkt. Dafür, dass das Moto G6 Plus im Labortest noch Kloppe für die Bildqualität bei schlechtem Licht bezog, war ich angenehm überrascht. Videos speichern Sie bei Bedarf in 4K bei 30 Bildern pro Sekunde (fps) oder in Full HD mit bis zu 60 fps. Softwareseitig sind auch Google Lens und andere Spielereien an Bord.

Moto Z3 Play: Akku, Akku, Akku ... Selbst ohne Mods ist das Moto Z3 Play mit einer Kapazität von 3.000 Milliamperestunden (mAh) gut aufgestellt. Wobei die Play-Modelle immer irgendwie sparen sollen, aber typischerweise den dicksten Akku mitbringen. Im Praxis-Test sorgte das für Ausdauerwerte, die über dem Durchschnitt lagen. Tendenziell sogar über dem Moto G6 Plus, das mit rund 15 Stunden Laufzeit bei normaler Nutzung zu den Handys mit der besten Ausdauer gehört. Und dann kommt ja noch die Laufzeit der Mods dazu. Die mitgelieferte Erweiterung mit 2.200 mAh hält den Akku bei 100 oder schonenden 80 Prozent. In der Kombination kommen Sie mit dem Moto Z3 Play auf jeden Fall weiter als mit den allermeisten anderen Smartphones. Dank des Schnellladegeräts ist das Z3 Play auch flott wieder geladen.
