Das Besondere am Design des Laptops ist sein Aufklappmechanismus. Für bessere Belüftung hebt sich der untere Teil des Gehäuses ab, wenn Ihr den Deckel öffnet. Dadurch wird eine bessere Kühlung erreicht, aber auch eine Angriffsfläche für Staub und Schmutz geboten. Denn das Gehäuse ist an dieser Stelle großflächig „offen“. Dazu kommt: Wenn der Laptop steht, mag die Konstruktion stabil sein, doch hebt Ihr ihn im aufgeklappten Zustand an, spürt Ihr eine schwache Bodenplatte, die sich an jeder Stelle eindrücken lässt. Klar, sie ist sehr dünn. Doch so eher nicht transportfähig. Also: Immer erst zuklappen, bevor Ihr mit dem Laptop den Ort wechselt.

Ausstattung und Leistung Der Formfaktor des Laptops ist nur so beeindruckend, weil die Ausstattung im Inneren so potent ist. Verbaut ist neben der schon erwähnten GTX-1080-Grafikkarte von Nvidia Intels vierkerniger i7-7700HQ Prozessor (2,8-3,8 GHz). Dazu gibt es, wie in unserem Testgerät verbaut, bis zu 24 Gigabyte Arbeitsspeicher und eine schnelle SSD, wahlweise mit 256 GByte, 512 GByte oder 1 TByte Speicher. Unser Testgerät war mit der 512-GByte-Variante ausgestattet. Vorinstalliert ist bereits Windows 10.

Auch der Bildschirm kann sich sehen lassen. Asus verbaut ein Full-HD-Display (1920 × 1080 Pixel) mit 120 Hertz. Das zeigt starke Farben und gute Kontraste und ist dank IPS-Panel auch blickwinkelstabil. Lediglich die maximale Helligkeitsstufe hätten wir uns beim Test stärker gewünscht. Arbeiten und Spielen ist draußen im Schatten zwar möglich, doch bei Sonnenlicht lässt sich nicht mehr viel auf dem Bildschirm erkennen.

In den Benchmarkergebnissen trumpft der Laptop dann so richtig auf. Bei „Rise of the Tomb Raider“ erreichen wir mit höchsten Grafikeinstellungen in Full-HD-Auflösung schon 105 Bilder pro Sekunde. Auch „GTA V“ läuft auf maximalen Einstellungen konstant mit 60 Bildern pro Sekunde. Mehr Ergebnisse seht Ihr in folgender Tabelle:

Kommen wir nun zur Geräuschentwicklung. Denn bei so flachen Hochleistungsmaschinen war es bisher normal, dass die Geräte richtig Krach gemacht haben. Doch dank MaxQ-Technologie hält sich das beim Asus GX501 in Grenzen: Zwar ist ein konstantes Rauschen zu hören, doch es entstehen keine nervigen Pfeiftöne wie bei anderen Modellen. Außerdem ist selbst das Rauschen deutlich leiser als bei der Konkurrenz. Schaltet Ihr den Eco-Modus aus, um mehr Leistung zu erhalten, wird es unter Last etwas lauter. Doch selbst das wird beim Spielen nicht nervig. Ähnlich verhält es sich bei der Wärmeentwicklung. Der obere Teil über der Tastatur wird unter Last sehr heiß. Doch Tastatur und Touchpad bleiben zu jeder Zeit kühl. Ihr könnt den Laptop allerdings nie auf dem Schoß benutzen, denn die Temperaturen werden auch an der Unterseite unangenehm hoch.

Wer Gefallen an dem Asus-Laptop findet, muss sich allerdings mit einer schlechten Akkuleistung abfinden. Unter Last hielt er gerade mal 40 Minuten durch. Und selbst im Idle-Zustand ging er bei mittlerer Helligkeit schon nach knapp 2:45 Stunden aus. Insgesamt misst der Asus-Laptop 379 x 262 x 17,8mm und wiegt knapp 2,3 Kilogramm. Auf der linken Seite befinden sich der Stromanschluss, ein HDMI-Ausgang, zwei Mal USB 3.0 sowie ein kombinierter Mikrofon/Kopfhörer-Anschluss. Auf der rechten Seite könnt Ihr ein Kensington-Schloss einklinken, habt zwei weitere USB 3.0-Ports und ein Mal Thunderbolt 3 mit USB-Typ-C.

Asus liefert einen passenden Schraubendreher mit, um die vier Schrauben der Bodenplatte zu lösen. Das ist allerdings nur dazu da, um die Lüfter zu säubern und eventuell kleinere Gegenstände, die in das offene Gehäuse eingedrungen sind, zu entfernen. Bauteile wie Festplatte oder Arbeitsspeicher sind nur kompliziert zu erreichen und lassen sich manuell eher nicht austauschen. Unter der Tastatur gibt es keinen Spielraum, sie schließt fast bündig mit der Außenkante des Notebooks ab. Dafür liefert Asus eine separate Handballenauflage in der Länge des Laptops mit. So habt Ihr allerdings einen weiteren Gegenstand, den Ihr zusätzlich transportieren müsst. Die Tastatur an sich ist durch die Bauweise sehr flach geraten. Es gibt kaum einen Hub, langes Tippen ist eher unangenehm. Per Software könnt Ihr die Beleuchtung der Tastatur nach Euren Wünschen anpassen.

Das Touchpad befindet sich beim Asus GX501 rechts neben der Tastatur. Das ist ziemlich gewöhnungsbedürftig, wenn Ihr den Laptop zum normalen Arbeiten benutzen wollt. Wahrscheinlich liefert Asus durch die ungewöhnliche Position des Touchpads eine separate Maus mit. Eine Taste schaltet das Touchpad zu einem Nummernblock um. Die Maustasten unter dem Touchpad haben einen klaren Druckpunkt. Das Touchpad an sich ist sehr glatt, sodass ihr locker darüber gleiten könnt.

Die besten Notebooks sind heutzutage Convertibles und in diesem Trend sind ganz normale Notebooks, zumindest im Windows-Bereich, etwas untergegangen.In diesem Bereich hat sich aber jede Menge getan, wenn auch die Veränderungen nicht ganz so auffällig sind. Diese Meinung hat sich durch großartiges Marketing in den Köpfen vieler Käufer festgesetzt.
